However, to be able to do this in the best possible way, you will have to be what is known as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Though there are several basic requirements in terms of education that are applicable in all the states, some do exist that are specific to a particular region. If you are looking for LPN Programs In Michigan, there are some requirements that you will have to fulfill before you can actually apply and register yourself in a program.
In the state of Michigan, it is the Michigan Department of Community Health that functions as the governing authority that issues LPN licenses. In order to be able to get your license, you will need to pass an examination that will be administered to you by the state. In order to be able to qualify for this exam, you will need to pass required training as well as a background check.
- Complete your pre-licensure education
In order to qualify for the exam, you will need to complete your pre-licensure education in the form of a course that has the approval of the Michigan State Board of Nursing. Your certification will have to be sent by your education provider directly to the state board at the time of your license application process. The course you take generally takes around a year. If you have studied in Michigan, then your school will have to submit what is known as a Michigan Nursing School Certification. If you are student who has studied outside the state, then your school will have to send over the official transcripts related to your studies.
- Obtain an application online
Once you have all of the above in order, you will need to fill and submit the application provided by the Michigan Department of Community Health. The application packet is easily available online. Page 8 through 10 will have to be completed meticulously. When you write your name, make sure that it is the same name that is on your photo identification document. The licensing application fee is around $60. You will have to make enquiries on the latest rates before you submit your application. The fee and application must be sent to the Department of Community Health.
- Register for and complete criminal background check formalities
In order for you to get an approval on your application, you will need to undergo and pass a criminal background check. Filling up page 7 of your application packet correctly is important for this. You will also need to arrange to have yourself fingerprinted by an authorized center. For your fingerprinting, you can register and make the payment online or you can do so in person on the appointed day. Once your prints are taken, they will be sent to the state police who will clear them and send them to the Bureau of Health Professions.
- Apply for NCLEX examination.
After you have cleared your criminal background formalities, you will then be cleared for the State test. For this, you will have to send your application for the NCLEX examination to Pearson Professional Testing or PPT. This can easily be scheduled on the phone or online. Once the PPT approves your application, you will be sent test authorization as well as instructions on how to schedule your test. Once you receive this authorization, you will have to take your test in three months. You can take up to a year to finish the test and then you have to wait a mandatory 45 days each time you fail. If you fail three times in a row, you will need to take a board-certified course to make up. In total, you will be allowed six attempts. If you pass the test, you will be notified by mail and you will receive your license at the same time. Your failure will be indicated the same way too.
- Complete 25 hours of continuing education that is board approved
Once you have your license, you will need to complete a mandatory 25 hours worth continuing education that has been approved by the board. These can be courses or separate programs. In this too, there is a stipulation, which requires that you complete a minimum of an hour in pain as well as symptom management in the course during the two years that your license is valid. Only then will you be able to submit it for a renewal. You may be exempt from CE courses if you are away from the US due to, a disability of some sort or because you were called into the armed forces for duty.

In order to give yourself a better chance at securing a place in an LPN program, it would be a good idea to get yourself some hands-on experience. You can do this by doing some honorary work at a clinic or a health care home.
